What's New in Fairmount Park Growing the Neighborhood This year, Girard Park in South Philadelphia and Wingohocking Park in Logan will receive funds through Growing the Neighborhood (GTN), a Fairmount Park Conservancy initiative. The Friends group for each park will decide what improvements they would like to see happen. They will do this in a series of public meetings with community members, Fairmount Park staff and the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society. Projects will be designed and implemented in Spring and Summer of 2006. Fairmount Park Receives Partnership Award The Fairmount Park Commission and the Manayunk Development Corporation have received an award from the Schuylkill River National & State Heritage Area. The two organizations were honored for their work on the refurbishment of the Manayunk Canal Towpath. The restoration project is a multi-year, multi-million dollar renovation of the canal and its associated infrastructure. Some of the improvements are: Renovation of the Lock Street Crossing Renovation of the Cotton Street Crossing Vegetation Removal and minor dredging South Embankment of Canal Renovation North Embankment of Canal Renovation Rehabilitation of Leverington Outfall Renovation of Towpath, Boardwalk, Lighting, Landscaping and Railing In its final phase, significant dredging and renovation of locks 68, 69 and 70 will take place to increase water flow. In addition, the Sluice Gate House and minor wall repair will take place. |
