Recognition of Volunteers and Friends
Every month, Fairmount Park receives a wonderful gift -- hours of community service from schools, companies
and concerned individuals. We are truly thankful for your help in making the Park a better place.
Fairmount Park is pleased to salute the Friends of the Wissahickon as Volunteers of the Month.
Friends of the Wissahickon
The Friends of the Wissahickon (FOW) are true pioneers in citizen action on behalf of parks. Formed in 1925, their role and responsibilities in protecting the Natural Landmark Wissahickon Park have grown significantly. Throughout the years, the Friends have raised public consciousness of the importance of the Park and initiated projects for the long term conservation and protection of this majestic valley.
In 1996, the Friends and Fairmount Park staff completely rebuilt 1,800 linear feet of the Yellow Trail in the park. Recently, the Friends returned to work on the Yellow Trail from Cathedral Road down to Forbidden Drive and back up toward the Houston Meadow.
FOW volunteers worked on the maintenance of rolling dips and gutters on the trail. They removed windfall limbs and repaired fencing adjacent to the trail.
The Friends of the Wissahickon frequently lead volunteer projects at which they build and repair trails, fences, and structures, remove invasive vegetation, and conduct general clean-ups. To learn more about the Friends of the Wissahickon, contact them at 215.247.0417 or visit them on the web at www.fow.org.
