Verree Road Complex
The Verree House is located in what can be described as Fairmount Park's ghost town. It is one of three last
surviving historic buildings that made up the town of Verreeville which was home to several generations of the
French Verree family. During its heyday, Verreeville contained as many as 24 houses for workers and had over one
hundred residents. The village surrounded the industrial complex that produced a little of everything. It contained
a grist mill, a fulling mill (for finishing cloth), a sawmill, and an axe, shovel and hatchet factory. Now located
within the boundaries of the Pennypack Environmental Center, the building is leased by the School District of
Philadelphia for a magnet program. If you want to rediscover Verreeville for yourself, ask for the self-guided
tour at the Center.
