Trolley Car Barn and Power House

William Wharton, Jr. won a 50-year concession to build and operate the Fairmount Park Gravity Passenger Railway in 1896. This successful operation was soon electrified and carried thousands of visitors throughout the Park. The Car Barn (1895), the Power House (1895) and the Strawberry Mansion Bridge are the survivors of that enterprise.

As the name indicates, the Power House housed the boilers, engines, and dynamos to generate electricity for the trolleys. The trolleys were parked and repaired in the Car Barn. Sadly, the trolley service ended in the 1940s. These buildings became park maintenance facilities.
