The Monastery
Enjoying a secluded and bucolic setting in the Wissahickon, the Monastery is an extremely rare example of a three-story
(as opposed to two-story) Germantown house built in 1752. How did it get that curious name? It's located on a site used
by a group of German Baptists (Dunkards) who formed a "kloster" or monastery on the property in the early 1700s.
Of course, the Monastery complex was also part of the storied Gorgas family's milling operation boasting both a corn
and saw mill for over 100 years. Today, the Boarders and Stewards of the Monastery operate the house and the stable.
