Tacony Creek Park
Tacony Creek Park connects neighboring Cheltenham Township to the north with the Juniata Golf Course and Frankford
Creek to the south. Local residents can get their nature fix in this 302-acre Park which is full of meadows, wetlands
and lots of green space. Visit the
Juniata Golf Club to work up a sweat. Tacony Creek Park builds a sense of community by bringing together numerous local schools, colleges
and businesses for Park revitalization projects.
Escape the hub-bub of the urban neighborhood and trek along the 2.5 miles of creekside trails. Stroll through the
newly planted white pine forest at Olney and Rising Sun. Can you identify any of the birds along the route? Pack
your binoculars for glimpses of Great Blue Herons, Red-tailed Hawks and Belted Kingfishers. Watch butterflies in
their native habitat and discover meadow areas full of wildflowers. If you've never seen an urban meadow before,
don't miss this quickly disappearing type of landscape. Take a minute to ponder that you're still in the big city,
yet you're surrounded by nature.
While exploring the area, see if you can sleuth out evidence of some of the long forgotten mills that made Tacony
famous - producing everything from gunpowder to shovels. Need a place to practice your golf swing? Head over to the
undulating greens of the Juniata Golf Club and see how many times you can whack your golf ball over the creek.
(Hint: Six holes feature this challenge).
