Solitude
Visiting The Solitude is always an unique experience because you'll generally encounter peacocks preening and
strutting out front. Encompassed within the grounds of the Philadelphia Zoo, this architectural jewel was John
Penn's country retreat. As William Penn's grandson, John Penn, Jr. came to town in a futile attempt to salvage his
inheritance. While he was here he built this classic house on the banks of the Schuylkill featuring elegant plaster
ceilings.
When you visit, be sure to see the secret basement tunnel that led to the kitchen. Now, lucky zoo administrators
get to take advantage of John Penn's elegant villa.
