Service-Learning
Ever dream of having class outdoors? Experience Fairmount Park's living laboratory where thousands of plant and
animal communities co-exist. Stand on an historic battle site or study the Park's architectural and engineering
firsts. Fairmount Park is rich with service-learning opportunities.
In service-learning, traditional classroom instruction meets service-oriented work in the real world. By doing
new things, students acquire academic and employment skills, and may even get school credit. Lifelong problem-solving
and decision-making abilities are developed too.
Service-learning not only benefits students, but also positively affects the community. It's a catalyst where change
is needed and can unify communities around common goals.
Fairmount Park offers several service-learning opportunities to better educate our youth and improve our communities.
Make a difference by:
- Planting native species
- Removing vines
- Cleaning up parks and controlling vandalism
- Controlling erosion and preserving streams
- Repairing and maintaining trails
- Testing soil and water quality
- Counting and observing species
Corporations too can contribute to service-learning efforts by lending their professional expertise, donating supplies
and equipment, partnering with students in monitoring initiatives, and even by promoting nearby service-learning
projects through employee and corporate newsletters.
Service-learning activities await you in Fairmount Park. Give us a call or
