Fairmount Park Ranger Corps
In 1987, the Philadelphia Ranger Corps was created through a grant from the William Penn Foundation. From 1987 until April of 1994, the Corps provided information services and historical, cultural and environmental programs to the citizens of Philadelphia.
In April 1994, the Philadelphia Ranger Corps Board of Directors eliminated the Corps' administrative and personnel support services and transferred the operational staff and the balance of the funding, to the Fairmount Park Commission.
With a new name, came new responsibilities. The mission of the Fairmount Park Ranger Corps is to provide a safe, enjoyable, and quality park-user experience to our citizens and visitors.
The greatest benefit of this change has been to improve the quality of the Park users' experience. The result? Improved conduct of our park users, a significant reduction in vandalism, and greater public appreciation of our parks' value.
These goals help the Fairmount Park Ranger Corps carry out its mission:
- Provide the highest quality of services to the Park users, including security, emergency medical services and information.
- Implement the Park rules and regulations through education and enforcement.
- Preserve Park resources through conservation and education programs.
- Provide ambassadorship services to all our Park visitors.
The Fairmount Park Ranger Corps operates three districts. The Fairmount District is responsible for the city's Central and Southern sections. The Pennypack District is responsible for the city's Northeast section. The Wissahickon District is responsible for the city's Northwest section.
