Hunting Park Master Plan

Fairmount Park and the Fairmount Park Conservancy have initiated a comprehensive master plan for Hunting Park. Through a combination of community participation supported by the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society and design support from landscape architects Wells Appel, two design options for a revitalized Hunting Park are now proposed. Scheduled for completion in fall 2009, the plan is designed to provide a framework for improvements, a strategy for implementation and will seek to develop a park advocacy organization. To see the "C" and "D" options and to understand how the designers arrived at these schemes, follow this link. But don't stop there. We still need your feedback to complete the design process. See something you like or dislike? Have a preference for either design? Please contact the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society's Tammy Leigh DeMent until August 1st at tdement@pennhort.org or 215-988-8870 with your comments and observations.

At their meeting on October 8, 2008, the Fairmount Park Commission passed a resolution regarding the Park's custodial funds and trust funds. If you wish to view the text of this resolution, please click below.
Partnership clears Schuylkill River Banks

The Fairmount Park Commission, in partnership with the Schuylkill River Development Corporation and the PA Horticultural Society, is undertaking the removal of dead, dying, hazardous and non-native trees in Schuylkill Banks that currently line the steep bank between the paved recreation trail and the Schuylkill River south of ML King Drive. With funding from the Fairmount Park Commission and the William Penn Foundation, a contractor is removing the trees, cleaning the site and seeding the bank with native grasses.

This project will open up views to the river and make the existing lower, earthen trail more accessible and safer.

Wissahickon Bikeway Construction Begins

Fairmount Park Commission Executive Director Mark A. Focht recently announced the beginning of construction on the Wissahickon Bikeway Project. This project involves the reconstruction and resurfacing of the existing 1.5 mile paved recreation path that parallels the north side of Wissahickon Creek, along Lincoln Drive from Ridge Avenue to Rittenhouse Street, in Wissahickon Valley Park. The $1.5 million project, funded by the City of Philadelphia and Federal funds from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, also includes drainage improvements, the installation of new handrail and embankment stabilization using rip rap, crib wall and block wall.

This project is part of Fairmount Park's on-going efforts to improve recreational amenities. Once completed, the improved Wissahickon Bikeway will connect to the park's extensive trail network, including Forbidden Drive in Wissahickon Valley Park, the Manayunk Canal Towpath and the trails along Kelly and King drives in Fairmount Park.

The complete reconstruction of this trail requires the path to be closed to all users for approximately 9 months from January to September 2007. Signage at various entrance points - including Ridge Avenue, Forbidden Drive and Rittenhouse Street - notify park users of the trail closure. The project contractor will also require occasional closures of a single, southbound (inbound) lane on Lincoln Drive for material and equipment deliveries. These vehicular closures will be planned and coordinated with the Philadelphia Police so as to minimize traffic disruptions.

If you have any questions about this project, please contact Fairmount Park at fairmountpark.info@phila.gov.
