Ormiston
British heritage links Ormiston's past and future. This land was once owned by Joseph Galloway, a notorious
Philadelphia Tory and the Provost Marshall throughout the British occupation of Philadelphia during the Revolutionary
War. In 1798, Edward Burd, a lawyer, built and named Ormiston for his granddaughter's country seat near Edinburgh,
Scotland. Constructed in the Federal style, Ormiston became a celebrated farm and pleasure ground with extensive
orchards. If you look carefully at the landscape today you can see traces of this past. Extensive trails, still
accessible for your hiking pleasure, were developed on the property once it became part of the park in 1869. Today,
the Royal Heritage Society of the Delaware Valley, an association of British expatriates, lovingly maintains
Ormiston.
