Hunting Park, Friends of
Established: 1989
Mission: The Friends of Hunting Park is a multi-racial/multi cultural coalition of community residents within the Hunting Park Community, organized for the purpose of rehabilitating and developing the 87 acre, class 1 recreational park facilities located within its boundaries. We see the park as a highly visible focus of community identity and an opportunity for real community pride. Organized to revitalize it also presents the opportunity for on going interracial community cooperation. Further, the group is dedicated to the provision of a comprehensive range of recreational and educational opportunities to area youth. The less idle our young people are, the less likely it is that they will be attracted to the various crimes that are so rampant in our community. Our aim is to raise the visibility of the community's concerns regarding the above, initiate activities such as the ones described herein and attempt to attract the support and partnership of both public and private sectors to provide for the major, long term renovation of the entire park. As the only park of its size or class in all of Eastern North Philadelphia, Hunting Park has the potential to attract major resources commitments once we get the community to demonstrate its commitment to a vision for its revitalization.
