Laurel Hill Mansion

The tale of Laurel Hill is right out of your American history book. Come discover the surprising and true story of Rebecca Rawle, a wealthy widow, who built this small country house in the Georgian style around 1767. After Rawle's second marriage to Philadelphia mayor Samuel Shoemaker, she lost her house during the American Revolution after the state legislator seized it because she and her husband were British Loyalists. (Yes, there were many Philadelphians who opposed the Revolution and sided with the British!) Fear not, Rawle was successful in regaining her property. Find out what other famous American purchased the property after Rebecca. Hint: He was the father of American surgery.
