History/Arts/Culture

Fairmount Park was originally conceived to protect Philadelphia's water supply. Over time, it has written quite a history for itself. Did you know that Fairmount Park has over 206 historic properties? The most in the state of Pennsylvania. Or that the 1876 Centennial Exhibition in Fairmount Park was the first world's fair held in the United States? As you might imagine, we take our title as a Commonwealth Treasure very seriously.

On the pages that follow, you'll get a brief overview of the Park's history, plus how to do more research on your own.

Fairmount Park is also home to many fine cultural institutions - and more are on the way! Whatever your interest -- art, history, sculpture, music -- chances are there's something in the Park for you. And if not, you're in Philadelphia, one of the most culturally rich cities in the country. It's a win/win situation.

Last but not least, this year, Fairmount Park will celebrate its 150th birthday. Keep an eye out for more good things to come.
