Friends Groups
Since the mid-1800s, the number of volunteers serving Philadelphia's parks has increased significantly. In fact,
over 80 volunteer Friends groups currently support Fairmount Park. These groups are typically community-based,
with members organized around a specific park, program, or historic site.
The common denominator of all these groups is that they're made up of organized citizens who partner with the
Fairmount Park Commission to restore, maintain and preserve the treasure that is Fairmount Park.
Organized for Success
Each Friends group impacts Fairmount Park. Informally structured groups are usually program-oriented or involved
in hands-on park projects like repairing bike paths and horse trails or supporting programs at environmental and
recreation centers.
Groups with large memberships, who handle large amounts of money, usually incorporate or seek tax-exempt status.
These groups may focus on renewing a city park or restoring an historic site in Fairmount Park.
Anyone organizing a new group should carefully consider how to proceed. However it's set-up, a well-organized Friends
group gains greater leverage in seeking community, corporate and governmental support.
A Contribution to the Community
Friends groups provide tangible support to the Fairmount Park Commission while tackling their own greatest concerns.
Their activities include maintaining historic park sites, planning special events, overseeing rental facilities,
planting and maintaining gardens, conducting archeological digs, and shearing sheep. The groups provide dependable
support for our neighborhoods by administering educational and social programs in the Park such as internships, sports
programs, family events, and environmental education programs.
Partnership
The Fairmount Park Commission is eager to partner with volunteer friends groups committed to preserving Fairmount
Park.
Making it Happen
If you're interested in forming a Friends organization, the Fairmount Park Commission's Office of Stewardship can
help. The Director of Stewardship can familiarize your group with the Commission's goals while your Friends group
develops and defines its objectives. Learn from other Friends Groups to coordinate your ideas or projects.
