Equestrian
If you think Philadelphia and horse back riding are mutually exclusive, think again. The Fairmount Park system has a number of scenic horse trails and open cross-country terrain for every class of equestrian. You can park your horse-trailer and safely off-load at several locations throughout the park system. Then take a ride through some of the most pristine nature areas imaginable within urban boundaries. In Northeast Philadelphia flat, grassy woodlands border the Pennypack Creek, offering a peaceful way to enjoy a lazy summer afternoon on horseback. Further south and west, hills and high ridges frame much of the historic valley of the Wissahickon Creek. Both novice and expert riders will be challenged by this terrain. On the east side of the Schuylkill River, in the flat open country of the East Park, leisurely horseback rides allow for interaction with sports enthusiasts, nature lovers and strollers right to the River's edge. Across the Schuylkill, the West Park showcases backcountry-wooded trails. The well maintained, gravel packed, cross-country trails contrast with acres of open country suitable for the solitary horseman or the touring group taking in the sights from the backs of a well liveried horses. Even further west and south along the western edge of the city, a meandering horse and hiking trail along Cobbs Creek lures the casual rider into an environment that combines scenic woods with an occasional urban intrusion around each bend. Nowhere in the United States is there anything like the welcoming embrace of Philadelphia's Fairmount Park system, as a haven for horses and their people.
