Blue Bell Tavern
Want to see where George Washington hung out in Fairmount Park? Look no further than the historic Blue Bell Tavern.
Built in 1766, the Tavern stood on the banks of Cobbs Creek and was the scene of a Revolutionary War skirmish where
British and American soldiers traded casualties. Washington and many colonial travelers rested and ate at this
well-known establishment.
In the early 1800s an addition (which has since been demolished) was added to the "Bell" providing overnight
accommodation for travelers. In 1909, Blue Bell Tavern was purchased by the City.
After suffering a fire and many floods, the building is being restored so future generations will know about this
important surviving southwest Philadelphia landmark.
