Birding
As Fairmount Park offers a varied habitat, you'll see a range of migrant, resident and nesting species.
In spring and fall, you may be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of migrants such as the Bobolink, Scarlet Tanager,
Gray-cheeked Thrush or Blackburnian Warbler. Spring migrants travel in bunches, whereas fall migrants tend to be
more spread out.
Winter visitors like the Pine Ciskin are rare, but have been spotted in both Pennypack and Wissahickon Creek Parks.
Some nesting species can be seen year-round, particularly crows, blue jays, starlings, house finches and house
sparrows.
Whether you're a seasoned birdwatcher or are considering taking up the sport, Fairmount Park has quite a selection of
birds. To make things easy, the
Friends of the Wissahickon and the
Pennypack Environmental Center have each compiled
a checklist of the birds in their respective areas.
